You’ll almost certainly have heard of the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100, even if you can’t remember it’s full name. And if you’ve been keeping up with our Re:Cycling newsletters, you’ll know that we are entering a team in next year’s event. So you’re obviously desperate to find out more.

Sofa to Saddle teams up with Leukaemia Care for RideLondon 2019

Leukaemia Care is a national blood cancer support charity, dedicated to ensuring that anyone affected by blood cancer receives the right information, advice and support.

A diagnosis of a blood cancer can have a huge impact on someone emotionally, as well as physically. Feelings of shock, anger and loneliness are all common at the time of diagnosis, during treatment and recovery. Having someone to talk to, providing the right information, at the most appropriate time, can be a huge comfort.

Leukaemia Care not only supports patients, but carers and families too, who can often carry a lot of the emotional strain when someone they love is diagnosed with a blood cancer. In short, Leukaemia Care is a charity that focuses on the support that is needed to help all those affected by blood cancer, to cope during a diagnosis and beyond.

A life changing challenge

Of course nothing comes close to the life-changing effects of something like cancer, and inevitably we will be all touched by it at some stage in our lives, whether it’s directly, through family or through friends. To help ensure that the support is there for when it’s most need, we’d like to raise awareness, as well as funds, for Leukaemia Care.

Raising money is challenging enough, especially with events like this, where for so many people, the only way in is through charity places. But for those who’ve never spent more than a few minutes on a bicycle, to get to the point where you can confidently complete the 100 mile route in under 8 1/2 hours, will require more than just joining a few of our social rides.

We hope that seeing the kind of life-changes that the participants will experience, and the commitment given by all those involved, will provide some small insight into the benefits of a good support network. And those digging deep to sponsor our team, will see that the team they’re backing are doing more than just turning up for one of cycling’s most popular events.

The Sofa to Saddle RideLondon Team

The team will consist of 20 riders, all participating in the 100 mile ride, which takes place on 4th August. Half of those riders will be complete novices. The remaining riders will be our regular Ride Leaders and members of Sofa to Saddle who will be on hand to support those novices throughout their training and on the ride itself.

Alongside the riders will be the support crew. Although we won’t be able to have our own on-ride support, as it’s a closed road event, they will be with you throughout the training programme. From basic mechanics, through nutritional and physical training advice, to the more subtle emotional support, there’ll be someone there for you 24/7. (Although phoning at midnight, because you’ve got a puncture on the way home from the pub, might result in a temporary loss of hearing.)

If you're ready to change your life, forever, read on

If you (or someone you know,) have never ridden more than 10 miles before, but would really like to take on this Herculean task, this could the greatest opportunity ever.

Our full training programme will commence at the beginning of February and will include:-

  • Evening Bootcamp sessions
  • Regular training rides
  • Discounted therapy sessions at The Studio
  • Regular free sessions with Health Coach Magdalena Reeves
  • Nutritional and physical training advice from PTI Sam Leese
  • Discounted entry to the 180 mile, two-day, StS Spring Ride

But of course, you can start preparing whenever you like. You can join any of our Sunday Socials or Friday Freerides, or even try out any of our regular Club Rides.

It's not all about the novices

We know there’s lots of you out there, who don’t fall into this category, for whom this is still a significant challenge, but we don’t want this to be just another big ride. So if you’ve ridden bigger distances before, whether it’s a 60 mile sportive, or one of our own longer rides, there’s still a place for you. If you’d like to join the team and be there to support the novices as a mentor and training partner, we’d love to hear from you.
